Succession: The Silent Crisis
The U.S. agriculture sector is at a crossroads, and very few people are paying attention. The average age of American farmers is creeping upward, and it’s not just because farmers are working longer. It’s because fewer young people are stepping into this critical role. The average age of a farmer in the U.S. is 57.5 years. Worse yet, fewer than 10% of farmers are under the age of 35. By 2040, more than half of our farmers will retire. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s the beginning of a crisis.
